Using Caran d'Ache's NeoColor II

February 3, 2025|Caran d'Ache

I am fortunate to have access to some NeoColor II crayons from Casey to experiment with, but I wasn't sure where to begin. So, I went to the YouTube and chose a tutorial by Emma Jane Lefebvre to learn more. Here is what I learned:

When selecting your brushes, any watercolor brush can work wonders, but it's great to have some specifically for NeoColor II. A stiffer tip can really enhance your creative experience, making it easier to manipulate and lift those vibrant pigments.

For the best watercolor experience, it's essential to choose the right surface. Look for paper specifically designed for watercolor, as it holds moisture well and allows you to move your colors easily. You can opt for smooth hot press paper, which is processed with heat to achieve its smooth texture, or textured cold press paper, depending on your artistic style. Enjoy exploring the delightful possibilities each type offers, or consider experimenting with AquaBoard, which features mounted paper that makes painting anywhere convenient.

If you want to create fine details with NeoColor IIs, you have a couple of options. One option is to use a palette to apply some pigment and then pick it up with a wet brush. Alternatively, you can sharpen the crayons. (Caran d'Ache NeoColors even feature little tabs on the paper, allowing you to easily pull down the paper when needed.) If you choose to sharpen them, make sure not to waste any material! Use small jars, a travel well, or any other little containers to collect the shavings. (I do this with my Museum Aquarelles too.) Then, simply add water to the pigment whenever you want to paint.

For a fantastic painting experience, the Caran d'Ache Palette is highly recommend (in stock)! This versatile dual-sided palette features a smooth side for traditional mixing, while the rough back is perfect for rubbing NeoColor II or Museum Aquarelle to capture its vibrant colors. It's a wonderful way to blend colors directly on the palette, ensuring not a single grain goes to waste.

Applications:

  • If you're looking to add a touch of color, start by using a waterbrush to pick up pigment directly from a crayon. The more pigment you apply, the darker the result will be. To lighten the color, add more water using a clean brush, then dab with a clean paper towel.
  • Dip medium directly onto wet or dry watercolor paper.
  • Apply loaded waterbrush onto wet or dry watercolor paper.
  • Premix colors on palette.
  • Begin blending in the lighter areas and gradually work towards the darker areas.
  • Apply colors to both sides of the area you want to blend and move them towards each other.
  • You can also layer colors directly on top of one another for added depth.

Supporting the local arts

Casey and I wanted a way to support local artists, and now we can! We are proud to announce we are selling other's art! We have acrylic paintings by Nancy Degan, watercolor pieces created by Kayla Seaton, and Casey is selling his work also! You can also improve your environment by giving those closest to you some of the scents provided by the Crooked Shack!

Hopefully, you'll be able to pick up local music soon.

Anyone around here selling any records?
