As a self-taught artist, I have been painting for over fifty years. I have been married forty-two years and raised two beautiful, talented, art-oriented daughters. After twenty years in the Army, we settled in Memphis and have called the Midsouth home for nearly thirty years.
In 1985, I taught at Palette de JuJu in Puyallup, WA. The previous year, I painted fifty faces to understand better how to teach portrait painting. Portrait painting was a true challenge that was both fulfilling and enjoyable, and I enjoyed sharing that knowledge with students at Palette de JuJu. I also taught an introductory oil painting class to teenagers every Friday afternoon with great success.
With an eye for detailed realism, I turned to fabrics, glassware, jewelry, and antique dishes-things that women collect and cherish. Pieces that hold nourishing memories and are passed on to loved ones. Each still life is pulled together, piece by piece, to create an intimate vignette of home.
I hope you enjoy my work!
After many years of painting landscapes, seascapes, and portraits, I was excited to discover a new genre for me that included lots of exquisite detail. Like crocheting or knitting, the paint brush captured each intricate stroke in the chain of paintings. It seems the older I get, the more detail there is to paint.
Sheer layers stacked liked dishes on top of each other, help to create depth from bottom to top in my paintings. Fabrics and necklaces help to create depth from front to back. Painting such details with a regular, creative practice was magic for me. Feminie, lacy fabrics, unique dishes, along with glass platters and plates brought the look and feel of elegance in an otherwise unsophisticated still life. What fun to capture the beautiful style of yesteryear!
And where else can you find a peacock in a mimosa tree or a pink cockatoo among the wisteria?
